What Is the Difference Between Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A?

All three are twisted-pair copper cables used for Ethernet networking. The differences come down to how they're built and what speeds they can reliably support over distance.

Cat5e — the "e" stands for enhanced — was designed to support Gigabit Ethernet. It's been the standard in Australian homes for many years and a correctly installed Cat5e run can still support 1,000 Mbps over a standard home cable run. If yours is performing correctly, there may be no reason to replace it.

Cat6 provides greater performance headroom than Cat5e. It handles Gigabit Ethernet more comfortably and with less interference, and it's a sensible choice for new installations today. For most homes — TVs, home offices, gaming setups, wireless access points — Cat6 is the practical modern standard.

Cat6A goes further again. It's designed to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet across a full 100-metre structured channel. That's useful in commercial environments and demanding networks where genuine 10 Gb capability is needed. Will Upgrading My Cable Category Make My NBN Faster?

This is the question we get most often — and the answer is almost always no, not by itself.

Here's why. Say your NBN FTTN connection delivers 70 Mbps to your modem. The Ethernet cable running from your router to your computer is already operating at 1,000 Mbps — Gigabit speed. If you replace that cable with Cat6A capable of 10 Gbps, what happens to the incoming 70 Mbps NBN signal?

It's still 70 Mbps. The Ethernet cable after the router was never the bottleneck.

For cable to make a difference to your internet speed, it would need to be the component that's actually limiting performance. If your existing cable is faulty, terminated incorrectly, or genuinely running below its rated speed, fixing or replacing it can help. But swapping a working Cat5e cable for Cat6A on a 100 Mbps NBN plan will produce no noticeable change in your internet speed.

Test the problem first. Replace the problem second.

The Misconception That Catches People Every Time — MHz vs Mbps

This one is worth understanding because it catches a lot of people. You'll see cable specifications listed as Cat5e around 100 MHz, Cat6 around 250 MHz, Cat6A around 500 MHz. Then your NBN provider advertises a 500 Mbps plan.

They look like the same kind of measurement. They are not.

MHz describes the frequency characteristics of the cabling — how it handles signal at different frequencies. Mbps and Gbps describe digital data transfer rates. A Cat5e cable rated around 100 MHz can still carry 1,000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet. The MHz figure on the cable jacket does not translate directly to the internet speed you'll get.

Don't compare the MHz printed on a cable spec with the Mbps on your NBN plan. They're measuring completely different things. Online retailers and some installers use this confusion to sell higher-category cable where it isn't needed — knowing the difference protects you from paying for an upgrade that won't change anything.

What This Means for Your Home or Business

If you have existing Cat5e that's performing correctly — don't replace it. If you're installing new cabling today, Cat6 is the sensible starting point.
